Please read through this message in its entirety, as I have taken extra time to build the picture of what the name of God can mean, and should mean, to us.
What is God's name, and what is the name given to His Son?
I had someone ask me that once, and it got me searching the Bible for a definitive answer.
Is 'Jesus ' the true 'name above all names' that God has given to the Christ?
How do we accurately "call upon the name of the Lord", and go forth "in His name", unless we have accurate knowledge and understanding of what that name is?
Here is what I discovered while seeking spiritual insight into this topic.
The word 'Jesus' is an English derivation of our Lord's given Hebrew name, and the original pronunciation was actually more like Yah Shua, which would mean "God (Yah) Saves (Shua)".
Research shows us that the spoken name used to address our Lord has changed much since He walked the earth, and there is continued scholarly debate over what His exact name originally was.
In the book of Mathew, verse 1:21 we read that in a dream, an angel of God comforted Joseph about his wife Mary's virgin pregnancy, declaring unto him: "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because
what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place that it might be fulfilled which the Lord had spoken through
the prophet (Isaiah), 'Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth
to a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel—which, when translated, means,
God with us".
So just in this first chapter of Matthew, we hear that the name of this Son of God shall be called both 'YeShua' (God Saves) and 'Immanuel' (God With Us).
Both names are very accurate descriptions of this Son of God, so both can be names by which He is known?
For those of us seeking Him today, either name can be used to call upon Him and expect a response to our reaching out in faith?
The prophet Isaiah, speaking about the coming Messiah declared further in Isaiah 9 that "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice, From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this". (Isaiah 9:6)
So here we read the words of a prophet of God declaring that the coming Messiah's name will be called several descriptive adjectives.
Now, the original Hebrew word for the name of God is HYH, meaning simply "I AM".
Does anyone have the right to change the name given the Son by God, especially when so much importance is placed on using His name both honorably and accurately?
Those Hebrews, well aware of the dire consequences of dishonoring the name of the Lord, chose not to even speak the 4 letter name that God gave for Himself. They instead just use "The Name" when referring to God.
For a modern Jewish perspective on the name of God, see the following website:
http://www.jewfaq.org/name.htm
God is a Spirit, and the supreme above all else that exists, both visible and invisible.
Man is a spirit with a soul and a physical body. Mankind is formed into the image of our Creator.
There are two distinct perspectives from which any reality is viewed. The first and truest perspective of reality is what we see with our inner spirit, guided into truth by the Holy Spirit of God. The second perspective is to see things carnally, that is with the natural senses and reasoning, interpreting spiritual things largely apart from our own spirit's help.
Jesus said "No man knows the true things of a man, save the spirit of that man. And no one knows the things of God, save the Spirit of God".
So, the name of God, and the name of Jesus, can be considered either carnally or spiritually.
From the carnal, or natural perspective, the name "Jesus" means more to Christians today than "Yah Shua", yet the former name conveys far less meaning than the later.
Just as the generic name "God" is more widely accepted than "I AM" as the name to call the Creator of all things, the more common name conveys less meaning to the hearer than the original name God used to describe Himself to man.
From the spiritual perspective, the name God called Himself and the name that Jesus called Himself are not a mere common word, but more importantly convey a full description of Who they are in relation to the one they are addressing.
Not only did God identify Himself to Abraham as "HYH", which conveyed to Abraham the meaning "I AM", but Jesus also called Himself by that exact name when declaring who He is to a Samariatan woman (John 4) and also to the Jewish Pharisees questioning Him.
Jesus said "Your forefather Abraham was extremely happy at the hope and prospect of seeing My day (My incarnation); and he did see it and was delighted.
Then the Jews said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?
Jesus replied, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I AM." (John 8: 56-58)
So, is the Son of God to be called Jesus, Yah Shua or by the name both God and Jesus identified themselves with: I AM?
I believe that the more accurate spoken name of our God would be "HYH" in Hebrew and "I AM" in English, and the name of His son Jesus would be the same.
Yet, being called by the name of God and the name of Jesus, or calling upon the name of the Lord, and doing things in His name, are all meant to be understood by us from God's perspective, which is a spiritual perspective.
Remember, God is a Spirit, as are we all, our having been made in His image!
When I was first researching the name of God and the name of His Son, The Holy Spirit revealed to me what “in the name of Jesus” was meant to convey, pertaining to spirit and truth. He gave me the following example:
"There is a landowner who has many servants. He has some business to communicate with the governor of the land, and is not available to make the journey himself to conduct the business.
He selects a servant of his own who knows his master’s ways, and he sends the servant forth to communicate with the governor on his behalf.
For the servant to fulfill the will of his master he must make the journey and communicate to the governor in a way that would be as though the landowner were actually there himself.
The servant should not speak for or be representing his own self interest, but rather he must be a portrayal of his master, the landowner.
When the servant communicates with the governor, he states that he has come "in the name of" his master, the landowner, who he serves and is there to speak for.
The governor recognizes and respects the name of the landowner and he receives the servant as he would the landowner, conducting his own communication with the servant as though he were speaking to the landowner in person.
As long as the servant is acting and speaking on behalf of his master, appearing “in the name of" the landowner, then he is due the same honor and respect as his master would receive if he were present, and nothing less.
The governor recognizes this and treats the servant as he would treat the landowner.
However, if the servant begins to communicate or act in a way not accurately representing his master, then he is no longer to be considered as being “in the name of his master”, but is now recognized as being or appearing in his own name, promoting his own interests."
Jesus consistently revealed that He was not speaking on his own, and was only saying what He heard His Father say.
Jesus was always acting and speaking “in the Name of His Father”, as he was always representing His Father in action and words.
Jesus was filled with the very Spirit of God, even from birth. And more than that, Jesus was the first child to be born holy! (Luke 1:35)
Everything Jesus said and did was directed from within His inner spirit, which was fully merged with the Holy Spirit of His Father, our Creator. The two Spirits of Father and Son are as One, and Jesus' outer carnal man of flesh was completely surrendered to the Spirit man within Him. Therefore, He could rightly say, “If you have seen me (or heard me), you have seen the Father”. (John 14:9)
Jesus further described that it was necessary to lose one’s life, or lay down one’s life, in order to find life.
In the example God gave earlier, the servant going forth in his master’s name has laid down his own life, and is now representing the life and ways of another, in this case, His own Lord and Father.
This is how Jesus operated in His earthly ministry. He did not express himself or His own will, but rather that of His own Lord, His Father in Heaven.
Speaking to His followers, Jesus declared "the kingdom of Heaven is within you", just as it was within Him. This kingdom of Heaven within is the spiritual territory under the supreme authority of God. And He is ever present within the heart of every believer. We are purchased into His family, the family of God, of which He is ruler forever!
As Christians, we are called to live a life surrendered to the will of God for our lives, led by His Spirit within our hearts. We are to be going forth into the world, among the lost and spiritually dead of mankind, as our Father wills, sent forth to represent Him.
"As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the children of God".(Romans 8:14)
When we operate as representing Him and not our own selves, then we are operating “In His Name”, “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’,
All of Christianity, the body of Christ, has the unique attribute of the Holy Spirit of God abiding with our hearts, anointing us to represent God, a collective body of members all under the direction of Jesus, Who abides at the right hand of God.
Yet, unless a man be "born from above", receiving the Spirit of Christ within them, having the love essence of God shed abroad in their own hearts, the intimate spiritual knowledge of God is not available.
A Christian with the Spirit of God dwelling in their heart can surely resist growing up spiritually.
Not yielding the physical body and not renewing the mind to the things of God, we keep the same carnal perspective on life that the rest of mankind has.
Jesus said that there would be a judgement time when some who would be rejected by Him would declare that they had cast out demons “in His Name”, and He would respond with “away from me, for I knew you not”!
So how can miracles occur in the name of Jesus and the person be rejected?
Here’s how that can happen, and why "the name that is above all other names" needs to be understood and invoked from a spiritual perspective.
Spirit entities throughout creation know and hearken to the power and authority of God. They also respect and yield to anyone fully representing God in truth. Demonic spiritual forces are in opposition to God's will. But they are well aware of their own defeat and prophetic doomed future. They also know that Jesus sends forth men “In His Name”, representing Him in the earth, and that He equips them with His authority and power as believers.
When a believer shows up “in the Name of the Father", and "in the Name of Jesus”, then the servant must be considered as though God and Jesus are being presented in person, since they are present in spirit and One with that servant spiritually.
In fact, all of creation must respond to a servant coming “in Jesus' name” as though Jesus himself were there. Because He really is!
Miracles of today are most often determined by whether a person has a true, confident faith in the ability and willing desire of Jesus to intercede, whether for themselves or someone else.
Early in my Christian life I ran across a woman who had been experiencing a terrible case of poison ivy that had covered her entire body weeping sores. For weeks she had been to specialists, none of whom could heal her.
As I left her that day, I sensed the voice of God from within me heart, that small inner voice, urging me to go back and lay hands on this woman. After some resistance, I agreed to do what He asked. I laid hands on her and thanked the Father for healing her in Jesus' name.
She called me the next morning and described how she was at breakfast with two other women. As she described how I had prayed for her and laid hands on her to these women, all of these open sores on her body suddenly dried up and fell off onto the floor. Glory to God!!!
I was walking in faith, called and anointed for that moment. And God showed up through me with the power and glory. But when a servant’s words and actions reveal something different than their master is known to be like, then the respect and honor due their master stops.
Demonic forces will respect and submit to someone coming in the name Jesus and God, but if they find out later that the servant is actually carrying out their own human agenda and not representing the Lord, then the tables will turn and the respect quickly vanishes.
In the book of Acts, chapter 19, a story is told of the sons of man named Sceva, who were travelling Jewish exorcists, as they unsuccessfully tried to copy Paul and exercise authority over an evil spirit within a certain man they encountered.
"And God did unusual and extraordinary miracles by the hands
of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or towels or aprons which had touched
his skin were carried away and put upon the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.
Then some of the traveling Jewish exorcists (men who adjure evil spirits) also undertook to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, I solemnly implore and charge you by the Jesus Whom Paul preaches!
Seven sons of a certain Jewish chief priest named Sceva were doing this.
But an evil spirit retorted, 'Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you'?
Then the man in whom the evil spirit dwelt leaped upon them, mastering two of them, and was so violent against them that they dashed out of that house [in fear], stripped naked and wounded.
This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, and alarm and terror fell upon them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled and magnified."
A man operating on his own behalf will be discovered and treated as any ordinary man.
Jesus said “Apart from me (not representing my interests as your master) you can do nothing” (John 15:5)
The spirit realm must respect the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and all those truly representing them, acting and speaking ‘in their name’.
When we are moved to act on God's behalf, His anointing is upon us to succeed, every time!
Jesus said "And this is the message [the message of promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all no, not in any way.
If a person does not dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken-off] branch, and withers; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned.
If you live in Me [abide vitally united to Me] and My words remain in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.
When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine".
If we abide in Christ, we also abide in the Father, for the two are one.
When we abide in Him, and His Word abides in us, we can ask whatever and it will be done for us.
As we represent the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in truth they extend their full creative and authoritative power to fulfill our requests, that our joy would be complete, and our testimony of them be confirmed with signs and wonders. (Matthew 28)
Children of God in the earth today are called to declare His works and His ways unto men, being a living testimony unto those who do not know Him.
God's highest purpose for mankind is that none should perish, and all would
come to accept the salvation knowledge of the sacrifice of His Son for their benefit, repent of their sinful ways, and turn to the Father in Heaven and receive everlasting life as beloved children of the Most High God.
